Teaching racial justice within racism comfort

From USA to Europe via India,the racial justice is a sadness reality.Ones who lie in their place of privilege don’t see that situation.It’s worse than Lazarus and the rich of the Bible.The deep gulf is established between them(Luc 16,20).

Wherever you turn over this,the poor’s voice is inaudible and he has no name.He is colored, black, african… How to plead for him?Here are some answers of Daily Theology(DT).

Long-time education theorist Stephen Brookfield suggests that educators need not shy away from their own struggles with race, but instead should be honest and open with their students.

He recommends an approach in which teachers recognize their own subtle, embedded racist beliefs by addressing five key questions: 1) How have we learned racism from dominant ideology? 2) How do our racist impulses continue to manifest themselves in our actions? 3) What are the ways we can identify these? 4) How are our racist leanings interrupted by disruptive experience? 5) How do we challenge and push back against them?[3]

By beginning with narrative disclosure – instead of presenting students with a lot of information on race and racism – the professor perhaps can begin to foster a sense of community in the classroom that will create space for the hard discussions.

Courses that regularly incorporate student discussion into class time often have better success in creating a classroom environment conducive to open and honest discussions about race.

Studies on the use of the narrative modeling approach for addressing race in the college classroom suggest that one of the reasons for the success of this approach is that discussion centered approaches to learning about race allowed students to own and share their own discomfort with the topic.

Here a couple of quotes from students are helpful: “‘Seeing other students with similar struggles and how they overcome their anxieties with the issues is reassuring that I too can overcome my own anxieties.’” “‘The first step towards racial-awareness is self-awareness and I need to be comfortable with being uncomfortable so I don’t run from the discomfort.’”[4]

Finally, those of us teaching in theology courses or other religious institutions have a special obligation both to address race in our classrooms and to help students deal with their discomfort.

As theologians grounded in an understanding of an innate human dignity given to all people by virtue of their creation in God’s image, we have an obligation to identify and address those things like racism that undermine human dignity.

Furthermore, as Anna Scheid and Elizabeth Vasko point out in their very good article, “Teaching Race: Pedagogical Challenges in Predominantly White Undergraduate Theology Classroms,” if our colleges are committed to educating “the whole person,” then we must be willing to deal with our students’ emotional responses as well.

By helping students give voice to the feelings they are experiencing – anger, guilt, frustration – students can more effectively deal with these complex emotions in ways that do not shut down classroom conversation.[5]Racism

These three approaches to addressing racism in classrooms are just starting points and suggestions, but the theme that connects them is crucial. Owning our discomfort when talking about race helps open up discussion about race and racial privilege that very much need to happen on college campuses.

By encouraging students to name and deal with their insecurities, we enable them to address racism in critical ways that avoid easy platitudes and recognize that there are no easy solutions.

In this way, perhaps colleges and universities can begin their own transformative process of truly being social forces for good.

The University as Social Force? An Octave of Theological Reflection

[NDLR: More and more, the University is becoming the front door of life. Even so, the campus is not available to poor. The majority get into debt in order to have access to it. At the end, the country is plenty of unemployed Masters or PhD. In the truth, it is a dangerous army pointed to all. Who will win?]

It is no secret that traditional institutions of higher education are struggling in the pro-business economy of the 21st century United States. Universities must ever seek new lines of revenue, administrations must ever hire new administrators to help find said revenue, and the easiest way to decrease cost is often to hire more part-time (adjunct) professors.

Daily Theology asks, amid the struggles, amid the building projects and NCAA scholarships, amid the growing class sizes, can we still find the mission of a Christian university? If so, what is that mission, really? And what are we doing to fulfill it?

From February 21-28, consciously both deep in the season of Lent and during Black History Month, Daily Theology will host its 8th week of reflection, entitled “University as Social Force? Protest and Activism in Academia.” The title of the week comes from the theologian and priest, Ignacio Ellacuría, who was assassinated by US-trained operatives in 1989 alongside five other Jesuits, their housekeeper and her daughter, in El Salvador.

Seven years prior to his murder, upon receiving an honorary degree from the University of Santa Clara in 1982, Ellacuría said:
There are two aspects to every university. The first and most evident is that it deals with culture, with knowledge, the use of the intellect. The second, and not so evident, is that it must be concerned with the social reality–precisely because a university is inescapably a social force: it must transform and enlighten the society in which it lives.

But how does it do that? How does a university transform the social reality of which it is so much a part?
Ellacuría answers his question with a call for the Christian university, for the Catholic university, to embrace “the reality of the poor,” taking into account “the gospel preference for the poor.

This does not mean that only the poor will study at the university; it does not mean that the university should abdicate its mission of academic excellence–excellence which is needed in order to solve complex social issues of our time.

What it does mean is that the university should be present intellectually where it is needed: to provide science for those without science; to provide skills for those without skills; to be a voice for those without voices; to give intellectual support for those who do not possess the academic qualifications to make their rights legitimate.”

Perdu,la Croix est venue à son secours

Il allait à sa perte.Fils aîné,Mario était le dernier de la classe.Les parents s’inquiétaient et pleuraient beaucoup.Dans l’école publique,il n’a obtenu que 38%. Comme ils étaient un peu aisés,ils l’ont conduit,sans demander son avis,dans une école privée très luxueuse.A la fin de l’année,il a récolté 20%. L’école ne voulait pas le garder.

Le conseil de la famille(oncles,tantes,cousins…)se réunit.On décida de l’envoyer dans une école dirigée par les Religieux (Abihayimana,les Frères). Le Directeur exigea un entretien avec le concerné.Celui-ci mit par écrit ce qu’il veut et ce qu’il fera(lettre de motivation)conformément au guide de conduite et de discipline de l’Établissement.

Le jour de la rentrée arriva.Comme d’habitude,les parents prirent leur Land Cruiser et le conduisirent à l’école avec 50000frw d’argent de poche.A l’accueil,on lui donna une grande enveloppe pour déposer son argent et ses bijoux.

En classe, sa place était n°1.Chose étonnante,il y avait en face, une Croix de Jésus qu’il n’avait jamais vue.Tiens! se dit-il,un élève qui échoue,ici, il est cloué comme ça?!Dans la salle à manger (réfectoire), la même scène qui force le silence.

Le soir ce fut le rassemblement dans la Chapelle.En franchissant la porte,il croisa un regard d’un jeune homme de sa taille, sur une très grande croix.Sapristi!Voilà un autre qu’on a cloué à cause de son échec!Le prochain ce sera moi!Il faut que je fasse attention!

D’ores et déjà,il s’appliqua studieusement.A la fin de l’année,il était le premier de la classe avec 80%. Les parents n’en revenaient pas.Ils lui demandaient comment il a fait.Il leur racontait cette aventure de la Croix qui est venue à son secours alors qu’il courait à sa perte.

Sans être Mario,une méditation semblable est possible à travers les lectures de ce dimanche( de Carême). Lisons spécialement la deuxième:

« Frères,
ensemble imitez-moi,
et regardez bien ceux qui se conduisent
selon l’exemple que nous vous donnons.

Car je vous l’ai souvent dit,
et maintenant je le redis en pleurant :
beaucoup de gens se conduisent en ennemis de la croix du Christ.
Ils vont à leur perte.
Leur dieu, c’est leur ventre,
et ils mettent leur gloire dans ce qui fait leur honte ;
ils ne pensent qu’aux choses de la terre.

Mais nous, nous avons notre citoyenneté dans les cieux,
d’où nous attendons comme sauveur
le Seigneur Jésus Christ,
lui qui transformera nos pauvres corps
à l’image de son corps glorieux,
avec la puissance active qui le rend même capable
de tout mettre sous son pouvoir.

Ainsi, mes frères bien-aimés pour qui j’ai tant d’affection,
vous, ma joie et ma couronne,
tenez bon dans le Seigneur, mes bien-aimés. »

Ce mercredi 10 février 2016,les États-Unis ont accusé le Rwanda de chercher à déstabiliser le Burundi voisin.D’après RFI,Washington accuse Kigali d’être impliqué dans des activités déstabilisatrices pour le Burundi.

S’agit-il d’accusations injustifiées ou d’un sincère avertissement d’un ami?Quoiqu’il en soit,la logique de l’accusé prouve le contraire:ceux qui ne soutiennent pas ces réfugiés,qu’ils les accueillent chez eux!Kigali ne voudraient-il plus de ces Burundais?

Quels sont les pays partenaires qui vont les accueillir? Et si les violences continuent au Burundi,le Rwanda va-t-il fermer ses frontières comme la Turquie et la Syrie pour maintenir les réfugiés sur leur sol qui brûle?
